What do you offer?
I have been a wedding photographer for nearly 10 years. Prior to that I worked in the hospitality industry which enabled me to gain excellent customer-facing skills. I excel at making nervous couples feel comfortable and at ease. Throughout my process, I work discreetly, never overstepping the mark when advising but always remembering that this is their day.
Why do you want to work with the LGBTQ+ community?
As one half of an LGBTQ+ couple, I know what it's like to be cautious in front of strangers even today. I have had couples who have experienced prejudice with their photographer before hiring me, I want to allow couples to feel natural and at ease on their wedding day and to have a good time.
I remember when myself and my partner had our civil ceremony, it was the most amazing feeling in the world to be recognised as a loving couple and I want to help other couples experience that as well. As a community, we've worked so hard to be able to legally marry and to have the same rights as everyone else.
Allyship
Throughout my life, I have played a visible positive role model for LGBTQ + people. I have worked with a lot of diverse and inclusive couples, and always state that my business is LGBTQ+ owned. I use gender-neutral language in everyday life.
Additionally, I support a lot of other queer businesses or allies and recommend other queer photographers if I'm booked on a day that enquiries come for. I attend gay wedding fairs and Prides whenever possible. This goes right back to the 80's when bumping into Peter Tatchell would be a common occurrence, I even have a picture of Lily Savage taken from such an event in my archive. It's an honour for me to be a part of this small community and I love doing what I do.
Even to this day, the wedding industry lacks diversity and I hope that by being visible, I can help bring about change. My partner is Goan and I have always been accepted into his family, and him into mine. Together I like to think we promote positive role models.
