We are always about collaboration over competition. When it comes to LGBTQ+ inclusivity in the wedding industry, we will always uplift and promote those who are genuinely invested in supporting our community, such as Love For All’s inclusivity workshops and other education led by LGBTQ+ people and real, active allies.
However, we’ve recently seen an example of someone claiming to be an educator on LGBTQ+ weddings while using exclusionary language, ignoring feedback from LGBTQ+ voices, and continuing to profit from tokenistic inclusivity.
This business promoted a ‘free’ webinar about booking more LGBTQ+ weddings but repeatedly used the term ‘same-sex’, which only includes a small fraction of our community. When several people tried to educate them on why this was problematic, the feedback was dismissed, stating that the webinar was only about “same-sex” couples - completely erasing trans, non-binary, bi, pan, and queer relationships in the process. Eventually, the post was deleted rather than engaging in meaningful dialogue. Now, we’ve seen that the same exclusionary language has been used in a newsletter, showing that none of the education was taken onboard.
This is exactly why it’s so important to do your research before investing in inclusivity training. Just because someone offers a course on LGBTQ+ weddings does not mean they are qualified to deliver it. If the educator is not LGBTQ+ themselves or a true, active ally, there is a real risk that their sessions will:
❌ Prioritise business profits over genuine inclusivity
❌ Spread misinformation or outdated terminology
❌ Talk about the LGBTQ+ community rather than with or from it
❌ Silence or erase queer voices, rather than uplift them
If you are looking for guidance on how to be more inclusive, we urge you to book with people who actually live these experiences or have demonstrated real allyship over time. Not just those looking for a new income stream.
True inclusivity is about listening, learning, and amplifying LGBTQ+ voices - not speaking over them.
